From a very young age, Chaitanya Roy felt a deep connection to theatre. Over the years, he has seamlessly played many roles — as an actor, director, and theatre organiser. He has also lent his creative vision to editing scripts for several plays. Whether through natural diction, vocal dynamics, or emotional depth, Chaitanya Roy exemplifies how expression can transcend boundaries.
His journey into poetry and abritti (elocution/poetic recitation) began through the world of theatre, gradually evolving into a lifelong devotion to spoken word performance. In this path, he had the privilege of learning and refining his art under the guidance of eminent cultural figures like Swapan Haldar, NaRoyan Biswas, and Pinaki Bhattacharyay.
Poets like Sunil Gangopadhyay , Subhash Mukhopadhyay and Nirmalendu Goon have left a lasting impression on him, shaping his poetic sensibility. He holds a deep admiration for the recitation style of the legendary Soumitra Chattopadhyay, whose delivery continues to inspire his own performances.
For nearly 40 years, Chaitanya Roy has performed across various platforms, receiving numerous awards and — more importantly — the love and appreciation of his audiences. Drawing from this vast experience, he has been mentoring and nurturing a new generation of abritti artists with care and dedication. He believes that the role of a teacher is crucial in shaping a complete recitation artist — a responsibility he has taken on with deep sincerity. Yet, in his own words, “There is still so much more to teach.” It is this ongoing passion for spreading the art of abritti that brought him to his current role as Bibhagiya Adhyaksa (Abritti) at Bharatiya Kala Bikash Kendra. Chaitanya Roy is committed to the institutional growth of abritti, striving to ensure that poetry — lovingly crafted by poets — transforms into living, breathing characters through recitation. His vision is clear: may these words, through the voices of abritti artists, continue to live on for generations.
